How to treat minor wounds?

Remember to wash your hands carefully before treating a wound. Any break in the skin means a bacteria alert. Tell children not to pick at scabs if they start to itch.

Some simple steps for treating children’s wounds:

  • Stay calm and reassure the child it will all be okay.

  • Explain to the child what you are doing, that it might be a little painful but they will soon feel better.

  • A minor wound will soon stop bleeding, if it doesn’t, apply a little pressure to the spot with a non-stick pad until it stops.

  • If the bleeding continues, apply more gauze pads and keep the pressure on over the wound.

  • If there is anything embedded in the skin, don’t try to remove it. This should be left to a professional.

  • Always wipe away from the wound to avoid infection.

  • Let the area dry and then use a kid’s adhesive bandage.

Now you have calmed and treated your child, give the bandaged spot a kiss to say, ”There, now it will get better soon”.
